Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) in 2027: How to Write Answers AI Can Quote

Quick answer: Answer engine optimization (AEO) means structuring content so search engines and AI assistants can lift your answer directly. Collect the real questions customers ask, give each a clear question heading, answer it in the first 40 to 60 words, support it with specifics, and add FAQPage or HowTo structured data. Keep each section self-contained so it still makes sense when quoted on its own.

Key takeaways

  • Answer engines extract passages, not pages. Every section should stand on its own.
  • Lead with the answer, then explain. Background and storytelling come after.
  • Lists, steps and tables are the easiest formats for machines to quote.
  • Schema markup confirms what each block of content is.

A featured snippet, a voice answer from a smart speaker and the summary in a Google AI Overview all have one thing in common: they quote a short passage from a page. AEO is the craft of writing that passage on purpose. It is one of the fastest wins in search because it mostly comes down to structure, not budget.

Step 1: Build your question inventory

Start with the questions people really ask, not the keywords you wish they used. Good sources:

  • Questions customers ask on calls, in emails and in reviews.
  • People Also Ask boxes on Google for your main services.
  • Search Console queries that start with how, what, why, can, does or best.
  • Prompts you would type into ChatGPT or Gemini if you were the customer.

Group the questions by intent: learning (what is), comparing (X vs Y), pricing (how much), and doing (how to). Each group usually deserves its own page or section.

Step 2: Write answer-first

Put the answer directly under the question heading. Aim for 40 to 60 words that a stranger could understand without reading the rest of the page. Then add the detail: steps, examples, exceptions and sources.

Weak opening Answer-first opening
“Websites are a big investment, and there are many factors to consider when thinking about cost.” “A small business website in Ontario typically costs $2,000 to $9,000 plus HST in 2027. Price depends on the number of unique pages, custom features, e-commerce and who writes the content.”
“Schema is an important part of modern SEO that many businesses overlook.” “Schema markup is code that tells search engines what a page is about, such as a business, an article or an FAQ. It helps your content appear in rich results and AI answers.”

Step 3: Use the formats answer engines love

  • Definitions for “what is” questions: one or two sentences, starting with the term itself.
  • Numbered steps for “how to” questions, each step starting with a verb.
  • Tables for comparisons and pricing. They are easy to extract and easy to trust.
  • Short lists for “best” and “types of” questions.

Keep paragraphs to two or three sentences. Long walls of text are hard for people to scan and hard for machines to quote cleanly.

Step 4: Add structured data

Structured data labels your content so machines do not have to guess. For AEO the most useful types are FAQPage for question and answer sections, HowTo for step-by-step guides, Article with a named author for blog posts, and Organization or LocalBusiness for your company details. Google limits FAQ rich results to certain sites, but the markup still helps other systems understand your page. We cover the setup in our schema markup guide.

Step 5: Prove it

An answer engine has to trust you before it quotes you. Add a named author with real experience, link to credible sources for claims, include dates and numbers, and keep the page current. Vague claims such as “industry-leading results” get skipped. Specific claims such as “we cut Total Blocking Time from 17,960 ms to 30 ms” get quoted.

Step 6: Check your work

  1. Search your target questions on Google and note who owns the snippet and AI Overview today.
  2. Ask the same questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
  3. Compare your answer to the one being quoted. Is yours shorter, clearer and more specific?
  4. Validate your structured data with Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator.

AEO checklist

  • One main question per page, answered in the opening paragraph.
  • Question-style H2 and H3 headings.
  • 40 to 60 word direct answers under each heading.
  • At least one list, steps block or table.
  • FAQ section with three to six real questions.
  • Article, FAQPage and Organization schema.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO aims to rank a page in search results so people click. AEO aims to have your content shown as the answer itself, in snippets, voice replies and AI summaries.

How long should an AEO answer be?

Around 40 to 60 words for the direct answer, followed by supporting detail. Featured snippets and AI summaries usually quote short passages.

Does AEO reduce website traffic?

Some answers are read without a click. In exchange you gain visibility and trust at the moment of decision, and people often contact you or search your brand later.

Is FAQ schema still worth adding in 2027?

Yes for most businesses. Even when Google does not show an FAQ rich result, the markup clearly labels questions and answers for other search and AI systems.
