How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews

Quick answer: AI assistants recommend businesses they can clearly understand and trust. Make your name, services and location consistent everywhere, answer real customer questions on your site, add structured data, earn reviews and get mentioned on trusted local sites. None of it is magic, and most of it also helps your regular Google rankings.

Key takeaways

  • AI tools pull from your website, your Google Business Profile, reviews and other sites that mention you.
  • Consistent, specific business information matters more than clever wording.
  • Pages that answer one question clearly are easier for AI to quote.
  • Structured data tells machines exactly who you are, what you do and where.

More of your customers now ask an AI before they ever open Google. “Who is a good bookkeeper in Waterloo?” or “Which Kitchener shop repairs road bikes?” goes straight into ChatGPT, Gemini or the AI Overview at the top of a search result. If your business is not part of that answer, you are invisible to a growing slice of buyers.

The good news: AI search rewards the same things good marketing always has. Be clear, be consistent and be genuinely helpful. Here is how to put that into practice.

How AI assistants decide who to recommend

AI assistants build answers from sources they can read and trust. For a local business, that usually means your own website, your Google Business Profile, review sites, directories and articles that mention you. When those sources agree on who you are and what you do, the AI can recommend you with confidence. When they conflict or say very little, it moves on to a competitor that is easier to understand.

1. Make your business information impossible to misread

Start with the basics, because AI tools are literal. Your business name, address or service area, phone number, hours and main services should match on your website, your Google Business Profile and every directory you appear in.

  • Use the same business name everywhere, with no variations.
  • Say exactly where you work: “Web design in Waterloo, Kitchener and Cambridge” beats “serving the region”.
  • List your services by the words customers actually use.

2. Answer real questions on your site

AI answers are built from passages that respond directly to a question. Give them something to quote. Turn the questions customers ask you on the phone into clear headings with short, direct answers below them, and add a FAQ section to your key service pages.

A good test: could someone copy one paragraph from your page and use it as a complete answer? If yes, an AI can too.

3. Add structured data

Structured data, also called schema markup, is a small piece of code that labels your content for machines. It tells search engines and AI tools that this is a business, here is its address, these are its services and these are its FAQs. Useful types for most local businesses include LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService, Organization, FAQPage and Article for blog posts. Most WordPress SEO plugins handle the basics, and the rest can be added with a little custom code.

4. Keep your Google Business Profile complete and active

Your Google Business Profile feeds Google Maps, local search and Google’s AI features. Choose accurate categories, write a full description, add services and products, upload real photos and post updates. An active, complete profile is one of the strongest local signals you control.

5. Earn reviews that mention specifics

Reviews are social proof for people and evidence for AI. Ask happy customers to mention what you did and where, such as “rebuilt our website” or “fixed our furnace in Kitchener”. Reply to every review, good or bad, in a calm and helpful way.

6. Get mentioned on trusted sites

AI tools put more weight on businesses that other sources talk about. Local news, chambers of commerce, industry associations, partner directories and “best of” lists all count. One genuine mention on a respected local site is worth more than dozens of low-quality directory links.

7. Show the people behind the business

Author names, credentials and real photos signal experience and trust. Add an About page that explains who you are, how long you have been doing this and what qualifies you. Put author bios on your blog posts.

How to check if it is working

  • Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google the questions your customers ask, every month, and note who gets recommended.
  • Watch Google Search Console for growing impressions on question-style searches.
  • Ask new customers how they found you, and listen for “I asked ChatGPT”.

Frequently asked questions

What is GEO or AEO?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) are names for optimizing your content so AI tools and answer boxes can understand, quote and recommend it.

Mostly no. Strong local SEO, helpful content and consistent business information cover the majority of it. The difference is a bigger focus on direct answers, structured data and mentions on other sites.

How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

It varies. Fixing business information and adding structured data can help within weeks, while reviews and mentions build up over months.
