Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) in 2027: A Practical Playbook

Quick answer: Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your business cited and recommended inside AI-written answers. To do it in 2027: make sure Google and Bing index your site, write pages that state facts clearly with named sources and numbers, add structured data, keep your business details identical everywhere, publish original data and earn mentions on trusted third-party sites. Then measure how often AI assistants name you and refresh your key pages every few months.

Key takeaways

  • AI assistants retrieve pages from search indexes, then choose a few to cite. Indexing in Bing matters as much as Google.
  • Pages with specific facts, numbers and named sources get quoted more often than generic copy.
  • Off-site mentions often decide which business gets recommended.
  • Different AI engines cite different sources, so track each one separately.

When someone asks ChatGPT “who builds Shopify stores in Waterloo” or asks Gemini “best bookkeeper near me”, the assistant writes a short answer and names a few businesses. GEO is how you become one of those names. This playbook covers how the engines choose sources and the steps we use for Mediasoli and our clients.

How AI engines choose what to cite

Most AI answers come from a process called retrieval-augmented generation. The assistant rewrites the question into several searches, pulls pages from a search index, reads them and writes an answer that cites the most useful ones. That gives you three gates to pass:

  1. Be in the index. ChatGPT search is powered largely by Bing’s index, Google AI Overviews and Gemini use Google’s, and Perplexity runs its own crawler alongside other sources. If a crawler cannot reach your page, nothing else matters.
  2. Be retrieved. Your page has to match one of the searches the AI runs. Clear headings that mirror real questions help a lot.
  3. Be chosen. Among the retrieved pages, the AI cites passages that answer the question cleanly and look trustworthy.

The engines do not agree with each other much. One 2026 analysis reported that only about 11 percent of domains cited by ChatGPT were also cited by Perplexity for the same questions. Treat each assistant as its own channel.

What the research says actually works

The original GEO study from Princeton University and Georgia Tech tested nine ways of rewriting content. The winners were adding citations to credible sources, adding statistics and adding quotations, each lifting visibility in AI answers by up to 40 percent. Keyword stuffing did the opposite and reduced visibility.

Tactic Effect on AI visibility How to apply it
Cite sources Strong lift Link claims to named studies, standards or official docs
Add statistics Strong lift Use specific, dated numbers instead of “many” or “most”
Add quotations Strong lift Quote a named expert or customer, with attribution
Fluent, easy writing Moderate lift Short paragraphs, plain words, one idea per section
Keyword stuffing Negative Avoid it completely

The 2027 GEO playbook, step by step

1. Get indexed in Google and Bing

Verify your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your XML sitemap to both and turn on IndexNow so Bing hears about new pages within minutes. Check your robots.txt to make sure you are not blocking search and AI crawlers such as Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot.

2. Make your business unmistakable

Use the same business name, address, phone, service list and description on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and partner listings. Add Organization or LocalBusiness structured data with your founder, services, service area and social profiles. AI assistants recommend businesses they can identify without guessing.

3. Write answer-first pages

Open every important page with a two or three sentence answer, then go deeper. Use question-style headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables. AI engines extract passages, not whole pages, so every section should make sense on its own. Our AEO guide covers this formatting in detail.

4. Publish things only you can publish

Original data is the strongest citation magnet. Share real numbers from your own work: before and after results, pricing ranges, timelines, survey results or a case study with metrics. When we fixed our own site speed we published the exact numbers, from a mobile Lighthouse score of 61 to 100, in our Lighthouse case study.

5. Show the people behind the content

Put a real author name, photo, role and experience on every article, and mark it up with Person schema. Experience and expertise are part of how Google evaluates content, and AI systems pick up the same signals.

6. Earn mentions on trusted sites

This is the step most businesses skip. AI assistants put heavy weight on what other sources say about you. Useful places include local news, chambers of commerce, industry associations, partner directories (for us, the Shopify Partner directory), podcasts, YouTube and honest “best of” lists. One genuine mention on a respected site beats dozens of low-quality directory links.

7. Keep key pages fresh

AI engines favour recent content, especially Perplexity. Review your most important pages every 90 days, update numbers and examples, and change the visible “last updated” date only when you actually change something.

8. Measure share of AI answers

Write 20 to 30 prompts your customers would actually ask. Run them every month in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude, and record whether you are mentioned and which sources are cited. That gives you a simple visibility rate to track. Add referral traffic from AI domains in your analytics as a second signal.

Common GEO mistakes

  • Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt without realizing it, often through a security plugin or CDN setting.
  • Publishing long, vague articles with no numbers, no sources and no author.
  • Inconsistent business details across the web, which makes AI unsure who you are.
  • Expecting guaranteed rankings. No one controls which sources an AI cites, and anyone promising “number one in ChatGPT” is overselling.

Frequently asked questions

How long does GEO take to work?

Technical fixes such as indexing, crawler access and structured data can help within weeks. Authority signals such as reviews and third-party mentions build over months.

Does llms.txt help with GEO?

It is a lightweight, low-cost addition that gives AI tools a clean summary of your site. It is not a ranking switch, so treat it as a nice extra on top of the fundamentals.

Do I need different content for each AI assistant?

No. The same clear, factual, well-sourced pages work across assistants. What differs is where each engine finds sources, so make sure you are indexed in both Google and Bing.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

Organic citations in AI answers cannot be bought. Some platforms are testing ads, but those are labelled separately from the cited sources.
